2015 Progress Report:
The Future of Big Indian
In 2013 John Mann wrote this vision statement concerning the future of Big Indian: “As the current owner of the land in Big Indian and passing my 85th birthday I must look to the potential future of this place. What I see as a highest and best use is the transformation of the property into a Sanctuary, a sacred space to which all may come if they approach with sincerity and reverence, a pilgrimage site providing an endless source of spiritual nourishment….”

Mr. Mann gives us this update for 2015:
Two years have passed since I offered to donate the nine-acre portion of Big Indian containing the Shrine, Stupa, Meditation Hall, Cabin and the Pond to become a perpetual Spiritual Sanctuary.
The conditions of the gift were that within a three-year period (concluding on July 15th, 2016) a charitable nonprofit 503(c)3 be formed and $300,000 be raised as an annuity to help support the Sanctuary into the future.
As of this writing an application for the nonprofit has been submitted to New York State, but it has not yet been approved. After that occurs it needs to be submitted to the IRS to receive recognition as a tax exempt organization. Further, approximately $200,000 has been pledged toward the Sanctuary’s annuity.
The offer has about a year to run. Significant progress has been made. If the gift’s conditions are fulfilled I shall be happy to donate the property to the new nonprofit. But if they are not, then I shall have to consider other alternatives.
